BlackRock Buys $151 Million in Bitcoin as Institutional ETF Activity Resumes
Institutional interest shows fresh momentum as spot bitcoin etf inflows return following weeks of market volatility.

BlackRock Leads Institutional ETF Revival
Institutional appetite for digital assets showed renewed strength as spot bitcoin etf inflows reached $175.99 million in their latest trading session, anchored by significant buying from asset management giant BlackRock. According to data from fund tracker SosoValue, BlackRock purchased $151.46 million worth of Bitcoin as of October 28.
The substantial allocation marks a second consecutive day of net positive inflows for BlackRock's fund after a period of cautious trading that triggered steady withdrawals across the sector. Despite briefly pushing prices back above the $81,000 threshold, Bitcoin dipped slightly by 0.04% over 24 hours to trade near $80,509 following the purchase.
Institutional Demand Restores Bitcoin ETF Inflows
The broader exchange-traded fund landscape reflects shifting investor profiles over recent quarters. Research published by Galaxy Research indicates that nine hedge funds reduced their spot Bitcoin ETF holdings by approximately 68,000 BTC between late September 2025 and June 2026, primarily driven by yield comparisons against U.S. Treasury bills rather than diminishing conviction in the underlying asset.
While overall reported ETF holdings dropped 14% among 13F filing institutions during that downturn, wealth management platforms and sovereign funds continued to accumulate shares. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs have subsequently recovered 87,000 BTC in total holdings from their June 2026 lows, keeping year-to-date net inflows positive at roughly $355 million as of mid-October.
Macroeconomic Pressures and Federal Reserve Policy
Despite the inflow rebound, broader cryptocurrency markets remain sensitive to macroeconomic catalysts and equity market movements. Derivatives trading desk Wintermute pointed out that Bitcoin recorded a 2.43% weekly decline during the 43rd week of the year, dipping to $80,500 after losing support at $82,500 following a single-day net ETF outflow of $636 million.
Market liquidity and option pricing reflect heightened caution ahead of central bank rate announcements. Analytics provider Laevitas reported that seven-day at-the-money implied volatility rose to 36.5% from 32% a week prior, creating a 9.2-volatility-point premium over realized price swings as traders position for decisions by the Federal Reserve and European Central Bank.
