Amazon Web Services Sees Record Growth and AWS Backlog Surge
Amazon Web Services has reached a major milestone as the AWS backlog climbed to $578 billion in contracted future business waiting in the queue. According to Amazon CEO Andy Jassy, this massive backlog has more than doubled year over year, driven by soaring AI-driven demand that has left cloud capacity sold out.
The $578 billion figure marks a steep climb from previous quarters. AWS previously reported a contract backlog of $496 billion as of June 30, 2026, which itself was an increase from $364 billion at the end of the first quarter.
Revenue and Multi-Year Commitments
The recent addition of $82 billion to the pile between June and October highlights the pace of customer commitments. Much of this surging demand is tied directly to AI workloads, which require vast amounts of computing capacity to train and run complex models.
Financial results for the cloud unit have mirrored this expansion. In Q2 2026, AWS brought in $42.2 billion in revenue, marking a 37% increase year over year and the unit's fastest growth rate in 18 quarters.
