Massive Binance Security Breach Shakes Markets

Cryptocurrency exchange Binance confirmed a major security breach with an estimated total impact of $6.3 billion, placing the incident among the largest crypto thefts on record. The news arrived as bitcoin traded in the $76,300 range on Thursday, following an earlier session high of $81,890 that saw millions in leveraged long positions liquidated.

According to an initial investigation shared by the exchange on X, the incident may involve a compromised DevOps engineer's laptop. The attacker reportedly gained access to a service container and submitted unauthorized withdrawal transactions, though the company stated it found no evidence of a wallet private key leak.

Industry Coordinates Massive Asset Freezes

In response to the exploit, major stablecoin issuers and blockchain partners moved swiftly to freeze affected assets. Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino stated that the company froze more than 1.567 billion USDT, while Circle also froze USDC tied to the suspected attacker. Additional restrictions came from Ripple, World Liberty Financial, and Paxos.

Co-founder Yi He and former CEO Changpeng Zhao both assured users that customer funds are safe. Binance announced that it will cover all hacking losses from the SAFU fund and company funds, and intends to publish an updated Proof of Reserves once remediation is complete.

DeFi Protocols Respond and Investigations Continue

As suspicious funds moved across multiple blockchains including Ethereum, Arbitrum, and Avalanche, decentralized finance protocols took defensive measures. Aave reportedly froze lending markets to block the suspected attacker from borrowing against stolen funds.

Deposits and withdrawals remain suspended at Binance while the exchange conducts security checks, revokes affected address authorizations, and works with law enforcement. The company has not yet released a timeline for a full technical post-mortem.
