Exploring Digital Payments Innovation in Chicago
The Digital Sovereignty Alliance (DSA), a nonprofit organization focused on ethical public policy and research for emerging technologies, recently participated in Nacha’s Payments Innovation Alliance Fall Meeting. Held from October 14 to October 16 at the InterContinental Chicago Magnificent Mile in Chicago, Illinois, the three-day gathering convened industry stakeholders from across the financial services and payments sectors.
Participants gathered to exchange insights, address operational challenges, and explore opportunities for growth. Discussions centered on evolving payment technologies, regulatory considerations, and practical strategies for navigating an increasingly complex global financial landscape.
Next-Gen Currency Project Team
During the event, DSA Senior Policy Advisor Molly Woodman facilitated discussions regarding the newly launched Next-Gen Currency Project Team. This initiative is co-led by Nacha and the DSA to explore the global use of digital assets, including stablecoins and tokenized deposits, for money movement.
The project focuses on developing tools to bridge traditional payment systems with digital assets, tracking regulatory updates, and identifying operational implications. Woodman noted that it has been encouraging to watch financial institutions brainstorm together to build continuity where regulations have not yet caught up.
Addressing Operational and Regulatory Challenges
Attendees also examined practical challenges facing financial institutions as modern technologies reshape payment systems. Key topics included expectations for agentic payments, the reliability of multifactor authentication methods, and emerging approaches to Know Your Agent frameworks.
The dialogues highlighted the critical role of industry collaboration in resolving operational uncertainties. Through ongoing engagement, the DSA continues to support informed policy discussions and responsible innovation within the financial services sector.
