Equities Drag Digital Assets Lower After Surge to $85,000 Fails
Bitcoin saw a sharp reversal on Thursday after briefly surging toward $85,000 late Wednesday, dropping below $82,000 as jittery equity markets soured investor sentiment. The pullback was triggered in part by mixed earnings reports from major technology firms Tesla and Meta Platforms, which rekindled doubts regarding artificial intelligence spending. Despite the price retreat, bitcoin market share reached 60% on Wednesday—its highest level since May—as traders sought shelter in the largest cryptocurrency amid steeper losses across alternative tokens.
The market turbulence resulted in widespread declines across global financial markets. Chinese stocks slid into a bear market, while South Korea's Kospi fell 3.5% and Japan's Nikkei 225 lost 2.7%. U.S. stock futures also signaled weakness, with Nasdaq 100 futures dropping more than 1% following capital expenditure forecast cuts from Tesla and a weak outlook from chip-equipment maker Lam Research.
Altcoins Suffer Sharp Losses While Bitcoin Market Share Strengthens
Alternative cryptocurrencies experienced significantly larger drawdowns than bitcoin during the downturn. The CoinDesk DeFi Select Index tumbled 5.6%, leading broad market declines, while the CoinDesk Memecoin Index dropped more than 5%. Ether fell near $2,400, and Solana's SOL token dropped 2.4% to roughly $104 despite the successful activation of its overnight Alpenglow upgrade.
The underperformance of smaller tokens has consolidated market value into bitcoin. Market strategists noted that global macroeconomic conditions remain the dominant driver of digital asset valuations, with bitcoin's inherent scarcity offering relative protection during stock market jitters. Privacy token Monero bucked the broader negative trend by surging 11%, while Zcash also notched gains.
ETF Flow Volatility Keeps Investors Cautious Ahead of Central Bank Signals
Spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds recorded over $1 billion in net inflows across the first three days of the week, according to SoSoValue data. However, daily figures revealed substantial momentum deceleration, with net inflows plunging 95.6% from $526.7 million on October 19 to just $23.2 million on October 20.
Industry executives warn that sustained buying via ETFs is required before confirming a durable market recovery. With the Federal Reserve preparing to meet on interest-rate policy next week, analysts advise market participants to exercise caution, maintain measured position sizes, and monitor incoming macroeconomic data including inflation updates and Treasury yield movements.
