OpenAI Launches GPT-6.1 Terra at Half the Cost of Sol
OpenAI has expanded its lineup with GPT-6.1 Terra, offering improved visual reasoning and lower API pricing compared to its predecessor.

OpenAI Unveils GPT-6.1 Terra
OpenAI announced the release of GPT-6.1 Terra, introducing a mid-sized model priced at $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens. According to Forkast, this launch arrives 27 days after the introduction of GPT-6.1 Sol. The new model is designed to provide fast execution, improved visual reasoning, and enhanced computer use capabilities, alongside more natural writing performance.
Prior to the official announcement, TestingCatalog and kie.ai had surfaced references to Terra in Microsoft evaluation configurations with unconfirmed pricing. The newly announced model delivers standard API prices that are 50 percent lower than the previous GPT-5.6 Terra model. Furthermore, it supports cached input at a rate of $0.05 per million tokens to help optimize recurring data processing tasks.
Pricing Structure and Availability
The current pricing structure across OpenAI's models provides a granular selection of performance-to-cost ratios. GPT-6 Luna is priced at $0.10 per million input and $0.50 per million output, while GPT-6.1 Terra sits at $1 per million input and $5 per million output. At the higher end, GPT-6.1 Sol costs $2 per million input and $10 per million output, making Terra exactly half the price of Sol.
Availability for GPT-6.1 Terra covers Plus, Pro, Enterprise, and Edu users within ChatGPT Work and Codex, with access also provided via the OpenAI API using the identifier gpt-6.1-terra. ChatGPT release notes indicate that the rollout includes Business plans, though the model does not currently support UAE inference residency. Additionally, some Plus and Pro users may notice the system defaulting to Terra at Medium instead of Sol at Light in default Power presets.
Broader AI Market Shifts
The wider artificial intelligence sector continues to experience rapid developments alongside model releases. According to CryptoBriefing citing The Information, coding-app company Replit recently transitioned its AI operations from Anthropic to OpenAI following a substantial discount on a contract exceeding $100 million annually. This transition highlighted low switching costs and operational flexibility within the sector.
Meanwhile, benchmarking evaluations such as Artificial Analysis's Code2Video-AA have mapped performance across various proprietary and open-weight models. Claude Opus 5.5 claimed the top position on that specific marketing video benchmark, while models like GPT-6.1 Sol demonstrated competitive per-task economics. OpenAI also reported broader milestones, including claims that its models proved the local smoothing conjecture across all dimensions.
