Former Ripple CTO Mocks Binance Hack as $6 Billion Security Breach Unfolds
As the historic Binance hack upends the crypto market, former Ripple CTO David Schwartz turns the $6 billion crisis into a lighthearted joke.

Dark Humor Amid the Binance Exchange Hack
The cryptocurrency market is currently navigating what appears to be the largest robbery in its history, according to reports detailing a massive security breach. Amid the chaos surrounding the ongoing Binance exchange hack, industry veterans have turned to dark humor to process the multi-billion dollar crisis.
Former Ripple CTO and creator of the XRP Ledger network, David Schwartz, reacted publicly to the disaster with a caustic joke directed at his historical competitor, the Stellar blockchain. Schwartz replied to a post by EasyA co-founder Dom Kwok, who complained that hackers had wiped out his balances while leaving only Litecoin untouched.
“These sick b*stards dropped an extra 517 XLM into my Binance account!” Schwartz quipped on social media. The joke highlights a long-standing corporate rivalry, as Stellar was originally founded by former Ripple co-founder Jed McCaleb.
Ecosystem Impacts and Frozen Assets
While the former Ripple executive joked about competitor tokens, the security breach landed directly on Ripple's own ecosystem. Attackers withdrew approximately 233.46 million XRP tokens, valued at around $296 million, from hot wallets. Because the XRP Ledger architecture excludes forced token freezing at the protocol level, those funds cannot be recovered or frozen.
However, the situation differed for Ripple's second asset. Ripple Senior Vice President Jack McDonald announced that the company detected the movement of stolen Ripple USD stablecoins and successfully blocked the addresses involved.
Binance co-founder Yi He publicly thanked the Ripple team for promptly freezing about $200 million in RLUSD funds, emphasizing that user funds remain protected under safety protocols. The controlled stablecoin served as a vital protection tool, contrasting sharply with the decentralization of XRP.
Broader Scale of the Security Incident
The wider incident encompasses a historic security breach totaling between $6.3 and $6.36 billion across 10 distinct blockchain networks. Major stablecoin issuers and exchange partners have mobilized rapidly to mitigate the damage.
According to reports, the exchange and its partners have successfully frozen roughly $3 billion across various ecosystems. Blockchain analysts have pointed toward the North Korean cyber group TraderTraitor, also known as Lazarus, as the primary actor behind the attack.
Former Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao, who remains a shareholder, assured customers that user funds are expected to be fully covered despite the unprecedented scale of the outflows.
