Building an AI hub in Paraguay
Nasdaq-listed Bitcoin miner HIVE Digital Technologies has committed more than $250 million to data centers in Paraguay over the last 18 months, according to Crypto Briefing. The initiative aims to help construct an AI hub in Paraguay using the South American country's abundant hydropower resources near the Itaipú hydroelectric dam.
The company initially entered the Paraguayan market in 2025 by acquiring a hydro-powered site from Bitfarms. These existing Tier 1 data center locations currently operate at 300 megawatts of capacity.
Expansion Plans and Infrastructure Costs
HIVE plans to increase capacity to 400 megawatts at its Yguazú facility by the third quarter of 2026. When factoring in energy procurement and infrastructure expenses, total financial commitments exceed $400 million to keep operations running.
Alongside its infrastructure buildout, the company currently produces approximately 8.5 Bitcoin per day from its operations. HIVE also exports compute capacity to the United States while developing what it calls Tier 3 AI factories.
Local Economic and Community Impact
Executive Chairman Frank Holmes and other leaders at HIVE have emphasized the local economic impact of the project. The company reports adding more than 300 positions, which includes 40 engineering roles.
HIVE has additionally established educational programs backed by technology partnerships. These efforts involve supplying computers and Starlink connectivity to support local schooling initiatives.
