Tesla Optimus Academy

Tesla has introduced a new training program called the Tesla Optimus Academy, designed to allow its humanoid robots to learn real-world tasks by actively performing them. The initiative was revealed during Tesla's Q3 2026 earnings call on October 21, 2026, addressing the challenge of how robots gather operational experience.

The internal program uses a method similar to what artificial intelligence researchers refer to as self-play. Robots attempt tasks, record the outcomes, and subsequently refine their underlying AI models using the resulting data.

Production and Manufacturing Milestones

To support the training initiative, Tesla intends to produce between 10,000 and 20,000 Optimus units specifically for the Academy fleet. Elon Musk indicated that this initial wave is primarily intended for scalable task practice and rapid model refinement rather than immediate commercial sales.

Manufacturing has already begun at Tesla's factory in Fremont, California, utilizing a dedicated line that previously produced Model S and X vehicles. Meanwhile, a larger production facility is under construction in Austin, Texas, to expand the company's manufacturing capacity.

Hardware Upgrades and Timeline

Tesla plans to integrate its AI5 chip into the Optimus robots around April 2027. Following the internal training phase and hardware upgrades, external deliveries to outside customers are currently targeted for the end of 2027.

The company also prepares to release a video within the next couple of months to showcase the robots performing artificial intelligence-driven tasks. This upcoming footage is intended to demonstrate practical training progress rather than scripted presentations.
