Suspected Binance Hack Sparks Multibillion-Dollar Outflows

Concerns regarding a potential Binance hack emerged on Thursday after onchain data revealed substantial outflows from the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange. According to reports, suspicious transfers ranging from $2 billion to as high as $5.8 billion left Binance hot wallets for an unlabeled address funded by Tornado Cash. Blockchain researcher Spreek first flagged the unusual activity, prompting intense scrutiny across the digital asset sector.

Security firms and industry experts quickly mobilized to assess the scale of the incident. Coinbase senior director Conor Grogan estimated the outflows at $5.8 billion, while Blockaid reported investigating $3.3 billion in suspicious movements across the Ethereum, Arbitrum, and Avalanche networks. Etherscan data reviewed by BeInCrypto indicated that a single address received 28,005.6 ETH, holding more than $2.3 billion in tokens.

Stablecoin Issuers and Protocols Freeze Funds

In response to the unfolding situation, major stablecoin issuers took swift action to mitigate potential losses. Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino stated that the company froze more than 1.567 billion USDT, while Circle froze approximately $823 million in USDC, according to former Binance CEO and shareholder Changpeng Zhao. Combined figures place total stablecoin freezes between $1.8 billion and $2.4 billion.

Decentralized finance protocols also acted to contain the threat. Aave reportedly suspended its lending markets to prevent the suspected attacker from borrowing assets. Meanwhile, Binance co-founder Yi He confirmed via X that the company's security teams are actively investigating all relevant information with urgency and will provide verified updates through official channels.

Market Reaction and Bitcoin Price Slide

The reports of a security breach rippled rapidly through global markets, exerting immediate downward pressure on major digital assets. Bitcoin fell below $79,000, trading around $78,800 and marking a 2.89% decline over a 24-hour period. The leading cryptocurrency had earlier reached a daily high of $81,890 before sliding sharply after 4 p.m. Eastern Time as news of the incident spread.

The sudden market downturn drove widespread liquidations across the crypto ecosystem, topping $628 million within a single hour. Amid the volatility, other major exchanges sought to reassure users; Bybit confirmed that its systems are operating normally and that user assets remain secure, unaffected by the events surrounding Binance.
