Bitcoin Redemption Freeze Halts Aave Deposits
Aave has restricted new deposits and borrowing against $136 million in tokenized Bitcoin following a Bitcoin redemption freeze initiated by Threshold Network. The October 31 intervention occurred after Threshold suspended tBTC minting and redemptions while conducting undisclosed security maintenance.
In response to the bridge suspension, decentralized lending protocols moved quickly to limit their exposure to the asset. According to an October 31 governance notice, Aave's guardian multisig executed the restrictions at 10:01 UTC, preventing users from depositing additional tBTC or using the token to increase borrowing power.
Protocol Backing and Risk Mitigation
Threshold stated in a security update that the token remained fully backed, with approximately 4,320 BTC held in bridge wallets against 4,185 tBTC in circulation. Investigators reportedly found no unauthorized token minting, and reserves exceeded the circulating supply by about 135 BTC.
Despite assurances that funds were safe, risk service providers recommended immediate action. LlamaRisk recommended the freeze on Aave's Ethereum V3 Core market, where roughly 1,760 tBTC worth $136.6 million had been supplied, representing about 42% of the token's circulating supply.
DeFi Broad Market Impact
Other decentralized finance risk managers also moved to reduce exposure amid concerns over secondary-market liquidity. Gauntlet disclosed that its Ethereum Morpho USDC Core vault placed its tBTC-backed lending market on an emergency exclusion list and withdrew approximately 65,000 USDC in available liquidity.
While existing tBTC remains transferable across Ethereum and layer-2 networks, direct Bitcoin redemptions remain paused until Threshold resumes normal operations following remediation.
