Standard Chartered Expands Institutional Crypto Custody Footprint

Standard Chartered is further developing its institutional crypto custody operations by adding Singapore to its existing geographical footprint. According to reporting from Cryptobriefing, social media speculation has quickly linked this regional push to Ripple’s RLUSD stablecoin operating on the XRP Ledger.

However, the bank's formal announcement on October 8, 2026, presents a more measured roadmap. The planned service in Singapore is specifically designed for institutional investors and corporate clients who qualify as accredited investors.

The proposed custody offerings will encompass selected digital assets, stablecoins, and tokenized real-world assets. Ying Ying Tan, who serves as the bank’s global head of digital assets, noted that the institution is targeting a completion date by the end of 2026.

Navigating Regulatory Approvals and Asset Scope

While the initiative outlines broad categories such as stablecoins, the official announcement from Standard Chartered Bank (Singapore) Limited does not explicitly name RLUSD or the XRP Ledger. Observers note that while stablecoins fall within the intended scope, formal confirmation regarding specific supported tokens remains absent from official communications.

Furthermore, the entire rollout is contingent upon obtaining the necessary regulatory approvals in Singapore, meaning the service is not yet fully operational. The end-of-year target serves as a projected goal rather than a guaranteed launch date.

This strategic development in Singapore aligns with broader industry discussions. During TOKEN2049 Week in Singapore, industry executives gathered at the Institutional Onchain Finance Summit 2026 to examine the underlying infrastructure, compliance measures, and operational security needed for institutional onchain finance.

Building Global Infrastructure and In-House Capabilities

Before setting its sights on Singapore, Standard Chartered already established digital asset custody operations across several international jurisdictions, including the UAE, Hong Kong, and Luxembourg. In Luxembourg, the bank secured authorization under MiCA, the comprehensive regulatory framework established by the European Union.

The financial institution has also forged strategic partnerships, such as working alongside LMAX Group to bolster its digital asset custody services. A major structural shift occurred in May 2026 when Standard Chartered integrated Zodia Custody directly into its banking division, moving digital safekeeping closer to core banking operations.

As the bank works toward its year-end target in Singapore, market participants are monitoring key milestones. These include securing regulatory clearance, the eventual release of a definitive supported asset list, and any direct clarifications regarding RLUSD integration.
