Empowering AI Agents on the XRP Ledger
Ripple and Privy, a Stripe-owned company, have shifted the focus of agentic commerce by embedding programmable wallet infrastructure directly into the XRP Ledger. This integration marks a major Layer 1 development designed to provide AI agents with native, autonomous financial capabilities.
According to forkast.news, developers can now programmatically create and manage XRPL accounts. This capability allows AI agents to hold and transact funds utilizing XRP, RLUSD, and other native digital assets, requiring a 1 XRP minimum reserve for account activation.
Protocol Utility and Transaction Volumes
The underlying utility of this new infrastructure relies on the x402 protocol, which facilitates machine-to-machine payments across networks. Vendor-sourced figures from the XRPL AI Hub and t54 indicate that the ledger has processed roughly 13 to 14 million AI agent payments, representing approximately 25% of overall network activity.
Separately, the x402 protocol has recorded 191.75 million cumulative transactions across 12 different chains. However, BigGo Finance estimates note that roughly 25 to 30% of this recorded volume may consist of test or leaderboard noise.
Shifting the Merchant Paradigm
This new infrastructure operates independently from older agentic checkout models, such as Shopify's gate, Constructor's in-agent checkout, and Salesforce's authorization-as-checkout. While those traditional models place the merchant of record at the center of the transaction, moving the wallet to the Layer 1 level enables agents to act as independent financial entities.
Ayo Akinyele, senior director of engineering at RippleX, noted that a well-designed agent can monitor conditions, trigger payments, handle asset conversions natively, and confirm settlements without manual intervention. Markus Infanger, SVP of RippleX at Ripple, added that Privy brings proven wallet infrastructure that eases the deployment of real fintech products on XRPL.
