Standard Chartered Introduces UAE Crypto Trading

Standard Chartered has rolled out Bitcoin and ether trading for eligible affluent clients in the United Arab Emirates. According to Cryptonews, the new offering allows eligible professional investors to execute trades directly through their existing bank accounts under the approval of Dubai’s Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority.

Cryptobriefing reports that the service went live on October 14, 2026, establishing Standard Chartered as the first international lender to provide direct digital-asset trading within the UAE. The setup connects crypto access to clients' standard banking applications, avoiding the need for separate exchange logins or wiring funds to third-party platforms.

A Closed-Loop Model and Institutional Custody

The bank describes the architecture as a closed-loop model where money and digital assets remain within the institution's proprietary ecosystem. Institutional-grade custody and settlement processes back the system rather than relying on external intermediaries.

The infrastructure was constructed in collaboration with Zodia Markets, a firm supported by SC Ventures, which serves as the bank's innovation and investment arm. Eligibility for the service is limited to affluent clients who satisfy professional investor criteria concerning both liquid net worth and investment knowledge.

Pricing Structure and Regulatory Context

On the financial side, the solution incorporates spreads of up to 2% with no additional custody or transaction fees in designated contexts. The bank generates revenue through this price gap rather than relying on a multitude of line-item charges.

The launch operates under the regulatory oversight of the Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority, reinforcing the region's position as a regulated hub for virtual assets. This rollout follows earlier digital-asset initiatives by the institution, including institutional spot trading launched through its Dubai International Financial Centre entity in September 2026 under the supervision of the Dubai Financial Services Authority.
