Ethereum Developers Patch Glamsterdam Upgrade Flaw Involving Staking Deposits
Ethereum core developers have successfully merged a crucial fix for a Glamsterdam upgrade bug that could have redirected validator deposits.

Patching the Glamsterdam Upgrade
Ethereum developers have successfully patched a security flaw within the upcoming Glamsterdam upgrade that could have allowed an operator to misdirect user funds. According to a report by CoinDesk, the vulnerability could have mistakenly routed staking deposits intended for new validators directly to builders.
The newly introduced fix successfully modifies how the network handles validator deposits. Developers officially merged the patch on Monday following a previous rejection just a week prior.
Identifying the Staking Flaw
The underlying problem emerged during the upgrade process when Ethereum processed pending deposits waiting to be credited. Researcher avsetsin identified a scenario where an operator registering as a builder using a specific public key could capture staking service funds.
Avsetsin examined potential impacts across prominent protocols including Lido, Origin, and Rocket Pool. However, the researcher noted that these were conditional code findings rather than confirmed live exploits, and no actual financial losses have been reported to date.
Timeline and Testing Status
Initially, developers closed the proposed fix on October 19 due to insufficient support from client teams. Justin Traglia, who maintains Ethereum's consensus specifications, noted that client software programs require further implementation work.
Following additional review and new tests added by avsetsin on October 23, the fix was ultimately merged. While the Glamsterdam upgrade has already run on the Sepolia test network, its scheduled launch on a second test network named Hoodi was recently postponed.
