Chinese Robot Makers Target AI Brains

Chinese robot makers have spent years teaching humanoid robots to run, dance, and perform backflips on conference stages. According to Cryptobriefing, the industry is now pivoting toward making these machines actually useful by folding laundry and moving boxes. Investors are paying close attention to see if these firms can successfully transition from polished hardware to practical applications.

The country's embodied-AI sector pulled in a record haul of 93.5 billion yuan, or approximately $13 billion to $13.8 billion, during the first half of 2026. Reuters reported that this capital arrived across 322 financing rounds, marking a striking fivefold increase compared to the first half of 2025. This massive influx of funding is flowing directly toward developing the AI brains that allow robots to perceive surroundings and learn tasks independently.

Cooling Investor Sentiment in the Second Half

Despite the record-breaking start to the year, funding activity cooled significantly in the second half of 2026. Third-quarter totals came in notably lower than the strong first-half average as investors grew more cautious. Market participants began paying closer attention to valuations and questioning whether humanoid firms can turn prototypes into commercial products that customers will actually pay for.

Industry leaders like Unitree Robotics and AgiBot are already showing positive results with notable revenue growth throughout 2026. These developments provide the sector with critical proof points beyond standard demonstration reels, acting as key bellwethers for whether embodied AI can become a sustainable business model rather than an expensive science project.

Shifting Focus at the World Robot Conference

The strategic shift toward utility was prominently displayed at the 2026 World Robot Conference in Beijing in August. Shenzhen-based X Square Robot demonstrated humanoids handling standard household chores at its booth, moving far past the acrobatic routines that previously dominated industry showcases. X Square showcased its WALL-B model, which pairs artificial intelligence with robotic hardware specifically designed for logistics and household applications.

Estimates indicate that China accounted for between 80% and 97% of global humanoid robot shipments across 2025 and 2026. Reuters noted that China's distinct manufacturing and data advantages could help its developers effectively challenge US rivals, who have largely focused their efforts on developing foundational AI models instead.
