Crypto.com Hong Kong App Closure Details

Crypto.com is pulling its consumer app out of Hong Kong, stopping retail services in the city on February 1, 2027. The company announced the move on November 2, 2026, giving users roughly three months to get their affairs in order.

The shutdown marks the end point of a phased wind-down of operations in the region. Affected customers have already received emails about the change, and Crypto.com plans to provide more detailed guidance on closing accounts and withdrawing funds in the coming months.

Regulatory Background and Licensing Status

The company attributed the decision to evolving regulatory requirements in Hong Kong and a strategic push to move resources toward markets with greater long-term potential. Its local subsidiary, Foris DAX HK Limited, applied for a Virtual Asset Trading Platform license from the Securities and Futures Commission in February 2024.

That application is still pending. While the review continues, Crypto.com operates under a deemed-to-be-licensed status that allows applicants to keep running while regulators make their decisions. If the Securities and Futures Commission ultimately rejects the application, that status could trigger a three-month wind-down period.

Strategic Shift Toward Institutional Clients

With the retail application going away, Crypto.com is shifting its Hong Kong focus toward institutional offerings. The company intends to serve professional and corporate clients instead of everyday traders.

Hong Kong has been tightening rules for virtual asset platforms, leaving only a select number of operators with full licenses under the regime. For local retail users, the practical impact requires closing accounts and moving funds before the February 1, 2027 cutoff.

According to cryptobriefing.com, Crypto.com stated that the decision to wind down retail operations stems from evolving regulatory requirements in Hong Kong and a strategic push to direct resources toward markets with greater long-term potential.

The company's local subsidiary, Foris DAX HK Limited, submitted its application for a Virtual Asset Trading Platform license to the Securities and Commission in February 2024, as reported by cryptobriefing.com.

Cryptobriefing.com noted that while this application remains pending, Crypto.com operates under a deemed-to-be-licensed status that allows applicants to continue running while regulators evaluate their submissions.
