Treasury Targets Iran Crypto Freeze

United States authorities are preparing to seize $1 billion in digital assets from Iran this week, according to U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. Speaking on Thursday at Newsmax's NPolicy Summit in Washington, D.C., Bessent stated that economic sanctions targeting the Middle Eastern nation are continuing to yield results.

The upcoming enforcement action follows a sustained government focus on illicit financial networks. In February 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump signed a national security memorandum directing the Treasury Department to target Iran's shadow banking, money laundering, and sanctions-evasion operations under a revived maximum pressure campaign.

Sanctions Evasion and Asset Vulnerability

Iran has increasingly utilized cryptocurrencies, including bitcoin, to bypass traditional U.S. financial restrictions. According to Bessent, federal authorities began targeting crypto wallets linked to the Iranian regime as early as April. The country's central bank previously advised citizens to take necessary measures to support the economy, leading to the use of bitcoin for cross-border settlements through domestic crypto exchanges and a bitcoin-backed insurance service for shipping companies.

While specific digital assets targeted in the upcoming action were not disclosed, market mechanics dictate how such freezes can be executed. Because bitcoin is censorship-resistant, freezing it directly is extremely difficult unless held on a centralized exchange. However, centralized tokens such as Tether's USDT allow issuers to restrict movement, with previous federal seizures involving the popular stablecoin.
