New Regulations for Thailand Crypto ETFs
Thailand’s Securities and Exchange Commission has issued regulatory guidelines allowing local asset managers to establish bitcoin and ether exchange-traded funds. According to CoinDesk, the new framework provides a regulated domestic route for investors to gain cryptocurrency exposure directly through the country’s stock exchange.
The guidelines are scheduled to take effect on October 16. Crypto ETFs will be required to trade exclusively on the Stock Exchange of Thailand and focus on a single cryptocurrency, with at least 80 percent of a fund’s net asset value tied to that specific asset. Initially, only bitcoin and ether will be eligible for these funds.
Investor Safeguards and Market Impact
Under the newly established regulations, investors will be required to confirm their understanding of the associated risks before purchasing the ETFs. Furthermore, brokers are prohibited from lending clients money to purchase cryptocurrency, and fund holdings must be stored with custodians regulated by the Thai SEC.
The regulatory update also allows mutual funds and private funds to invest in these domestic crypto ETFs within existing investment limits. Previously, Thailand permitted only institutional and wealthy investors to access foreign cryptocurrency exchange-traded products.
