Microsoft expands its Copilot ecosystem by adding Anthropic's Claude models alongside OpenAI, backed by a significant compute pledge.

Microsoft Expands AI Menu With Anthropic Claude Models
Microsoft has integrated Anthropic Claude models into its flagship Copilot ecosystem, moving away from an exclusive reliance on OpenAI. Users can now select Claude variants, such as Sonnet 4 and Opus 4.1, for coding assistance, research, and workflow management.
The rollout began on September 24, 2025, offering commercial customers a new default option. While the models remain accessible within Copilot alongside existing OpenAI technology, the move diversifies Microsoft's underlying AI strategy across its Microsoft 365 suite.
Financial Commitments and Regional Restrictions
The partnership involves substantial financial and computational backing. On November 18, 2025, Anthropic pledged to secure $30 billion in Azure compute capacity. Additionally, Microsoft committed up to $5 billion to Anthropic, while NVIDIA pledged $10 billion.
Regional availability varies due to regulatory compliance. For most commercial users outside the European Union, European Free Trade Association, and the UK, Claude is enabled by default. Inside those regions, administrators must manually turn the feature on to comply with local data boundary rules.
Strategic Shifts and Enterprise Impact
Building on the partnership, Microsoft launched Copilot Cowork on March 9, 2026, an agentic tool utilizing Anthropic's technology. Simultaneously, Microsoft continues to develop its proprietary MAI models and maintains its relationship with OpenAI, though reports indicate it has trimmed projected internal spending on Claude by over one-third.
For enterprises, the expansion introduces additional governance and data-handling considerations. IT departments face more choices and review requirements, while the European administrative mandate highlights how regional regulations can fragment user experiences.
