Anthropic Singapore Office Sparks Oversight Discussion
Artificial intelligence developer Anthropic officially opened its new Anthropic Singapore office during Singapore International Cyber Week, marking its fifth Asia-Pacific outpost following locations in Tokyo, Bengaluru, Seoul, and Sydney. Co-founder Benjamin Mann addressed the local tech community while defending the company's approach to monitoring advanced technologies.
Mann explained that the dual-use nature of powerful AI models means the company will not completely step back from observing how customers utilize them. The discussion comes as governments across the region push for tighter control over sensitive data and local digital infrastructure.
Partnerships and Government Collaboration
During the launch event, Anthropic signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Singapore’s Ministry of Digital Development and Information. Benjamin Mann signed on behalf of Anthropic, while Permanent Secretary Kai Fong Chng signed for the ministry, with Minister Josephine Teo and APAC policy head Michael Sellitto witnessing the agreement.
The MOU focuses on AI safety, security, model evaluation, and incident response, alongside technical exchanges on testing standards. Singapore represents a strong market for the company, ranking second globally in per-capita usage of Claude.ai at nearly six times the expected rate.
Local Infrastructure and Future Plans
Public and private adoption in the region remains robust, with over 1,500 engineers at GovTech Singapore utilizing Claude Code, and regional firms like Grab and DBS integrating the technology. Singapore's sovereign wealth fund, GIC, has also backed Anthropic through participation in its 2025 and 2026 funding rounds.
To address local data concerns, Anthropic currently offers in-region inference for Claude Sonnet 5 through Amazon Bedrock. The company additionally plans to establish full local data residency in Singapore, though that initiative remains a stated roadmap item rather than a finished product.
