Shift in Perspective on Bitcoin Quantum Defense

Quantum computing has long been viewed as a major potential security risk for decentralized assets, but recent analysis indicates growing confidence within the industry. According to ARK Invest, Bitcoin quantum defense mechanisms are better positioned for adoption than they were previously.

Lorenzo Valente, ARK's Director of Research for Digital Assets, stated in mid-October 2026 that he is more optimistic than a year prior regarding Bitcoin deploying a quantum fix before Q Day. This refers to the hypothetical point in time when quantum machines might become powerful enough to compromise network cryptography.

Evaluating the Timeline and Risk Stages

Valente's updated outlook follows a white paper co-authored by ARK and Unchained on March 12, 2026. The publication outlines five distinct stages of quantum risk, emphasizing that the threat develops gradually rather than materializing overnight as an immediate catastrophe.

Because the timeline is gradual, developers have adequate room to introduce protocol upgrades, including post-quantum signature schemes designed to withstand quantum attackers. Current quantum computers operate within the Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum era, characterized by error-prone machines lacking the scale required to threaten 256-bit elliptic-curve cryptography.

Addressing Vulnerable Coin Supply

Despite the long-term nature of the threat, specific portions of the circulating supply require monitoring. Data from October 11, 2026, shows that approximately 7.1 million BTC, or roughly 35% of the circulating supply, resides in addresses with exposed public keys.

Researchers note that a significant portion of these exposed coins are considered lost or held in addresses capable of migrating to safer configurations. Furthermore, draft proposals such as BIP-360 are under consideration to reinforce the network against potential quantum threats as community discussions continue.
